Hello,

I'm new to the forum but would be incredibly grateful for some advice please. We have a son (currently in Year 4) and have been told by his school that he *might* be bright enough to apply to DAO. It looks like a wonderful school but we're not really sure where to start in terms of giving him the best chance from here.

Is anyone able/willing to share any tips/ideas please? I've seen a few people recommend the practice papers but, as he is only in Year 4, I assume they might be too advanced.

Thank you in advance for any guidance.

Not a DAO parent;

There are so many previous threads about DAO preparation; try to read those as well.

Familiarise with KS2 syllabus, keep your child about a year ahead.
Read, read and read, understanding vocabulary, correct meaning, synonyms and antonyms. Practice comprehension and writing.

Bond books for the age group are good start. But these are easy. Once completed for year5 and 6, move to the difficult ones.

About 4-5 months before tests, do GL and FPTP practice papers.

Meanwhile, check the school website etc to find out the test style. Keep an eye on registration dates and catchment requirements etc.

Have you checked you are in the catchment area?

The postcodes are listed on the website.

Reading challenging books and encouraging him to to use advanced vocabulary, both in speaking and writing will really help him.

On Maths get the time tables really secure and that will also really help.

Wanting to go also really helps. Go to the open day in July. Put the date in your diary now and then there will be working days tours of the school in Mid October.

I have posted a lot on the school, do a search of my posts on DAO. DG

Thank you Tiffinboys and Daogroupie! I really appreciate the responses and guidance. We are within the catchment and I will definitely read up on your previous/ posts/advice (especially as I can now see I've been touched by forum royalty :D ).

Thanks again.
