Ds2 renewed his 16-25 during freshers week (about 2 months early) as he was offered 3yrs for £70.

I think the difference is that you can’t get season tickets with the 16-25?
I actually paid £2 less for the season tickets with this card than the season ticket for my younger son.

You are right you can't get season tickets or off peak fares with the 16-25 card. However if any dc are about to go to uni and need to renew their 16-25 railcard it's probably worth waiting until they get there.

£70 is the normal 3 year price, though?

My DD got her 1st 16-25 railcard free with her student bank account.
She has to pay for her current one but uses it for getting to work as it works out cheaper then buying a season ticket.. means she has to buy individual rail tickets ever week though. She also gets a reduction on the underground.
well worth the money even post school/uni

Well that was an interesting experience. Having never bought a season ticket for school with a railcard I didnt know that he would need a photo id card too. So I drove all the way home collected the necessary child got his photo done, queued up again. To then be told at 11:45 that they don't sell next day tickets before noon. Unless of course he got it on a keycard in which case he didn't need the photo card.

I have had stiff words with the 16-17 helpdesk and suggested that an information leaflet might be a good idea!

Fingers crossed he doesnt get kicked off the train tomorrow for fare evasion!

Yes, they need to pass on more information to the stations. I nearly walked without the season card too, but called the help desk who talked directly with the man in ticket office.
