DS and his friends have applied to Cambridge and Oxford to start this September. All 6 did not receive offers from the College they applied to, but they all have offers from a different College. Applicants who are unsuccessful achieving a place at preferred college are 'pooled' and then other Colleges can make them an offer.

How does one decide on which Oxford College to apply to? There are so many and they all look wonderful. Where do we start?

Any advice most welcome.

Hi,
1) Your DC needs to decide what is the course he/she is interested in to read at Oxford.
2) List out all Colleges that offer the chosen.
3) Find out more about the different colleges in term of (size, location, type of accommodation offered and other facilities such as sport, music etc)
4) Short list a few that fit your DC's criteria.
5) Goes to colleges open day
6) If then there is a particular college that your DC preferred and your DC has the require A levels or IB subjects then that's the college your DC should apply to.
7) If your DC hasn't got a preference then just submit an open application.

The "pooling" system at Cambridge is to make sure that the best qualified candidates will get an offer. We went to a Cambridge College Open Day recently and the Director of Admission said that some of the Colleges and Course will be oversubscribed and vice vasa. The pooling system is not to disadvantage well qualified candidate not to get an offer from a oversubscribed College and for a less qualified candidate to have any advantage by applying to a undersubscribed college (ie. In an undersubscribed college the admission team will look at all candidates that's been pooled and compared them with candidates that applied to them directly and select the final candidates they want to make an offer).

Academic? - Merton, Balliol
Pure Genius? - All Souls (don't even try!)
Cosy? - Corpus Christi, Brasenose, St Edmund Hall
State school? - Mansfield, Hertford, St Peter's
Gay? - Wadham
Catholic? - St Benet's Hall

Gothic? - St John's, Exeter (revival)
Georgian? - Worcester, Trinity
High Victorian? - Keble
Modernist? - St Catherine's
Easy entry? - St Hilda's, St Hugh's
The correct choice? - Any of the above (and more)
The wrong choice? - Cambridge

Good luck!
