My point was that ‘just’ being a naturally bright, top of the class type child, who might have previously been expected to pass, appears to be less likely to do so without any additional work above and beyond the school curriculum.

It is becoming more necessary to do extensive preparation in readiness for the exam, whether that is via a tutor or with parent input.

I would agree that it's not a case that all the 'bright' kids are getting through the Trafford exams. My DD passed for all the schools (tutored for 1 hour a week in yr 5) but we know of quite a few children who didn't get through who we thought would. I really do think a lot of it is about exam technique and being able to work quickly and accurately (which comes with practice). Obviously being academically able does come into it too but it is not the only factor by a long shot. In terms of prep, we didn't do anything formal until year 5. Before that we just encouraged lots of reading and mastering times tables etc.

It also has a lot to do with an individual child’s maturity level at the time of sitting the exam.
