I wouldn't recommend the undertaking but there is another option if coming on train from London direction which is to get off at Marks Tey & bus down Lexden Road.

Which is always grid locked at rush hour plus there are fewer trains that stop at Marks Tey so if you miss your train you're likely to miss the bus and be late

As I said, I wasn't recommending it, simply pointing out the option.

Thanks All. I guess Shenfield-Colchester commute is definitely out of the question! I wonder if there are any parents on this forum whose children have done or are currently doing this commute? Thoughts?

This question was answered in another Colchester thread a few weeks ago. The answer is yes. There are girls doing this commute, and it’s really no more difficult than the travel to Southend. Both require a train and bus - about an hour each way.

FWIW, Brentwood and Shenfield are pretty chocker at rush hour too.

If you live in Colchester realistically you only have the choice of Colchester and Chelmsford schools
