There are 2 buses yellow and green taking kids from solihull to the grammars in Sutton and 2 busfull of kids making the journey from Derby

So isn't catchment areas essential now

Especially for Sutton kids

And is it safe or even essential for kids to make such long journeys ?

Is any school worth that commute?

I'm sure that in years past, there has been mention of a pupil travelling to one of the Birmingham grammar schools (Camp Hill Boys', I would hazard a guess?) from London .

A friends DD secured a place at CHGS 3 days into term after a pupil dropped out on the basis that a daily commute from Milton Keynes wasn't viable!

That’s pretty much what happens in London with people fake renting in boroughs with the best state schools and is half the reason for the Chelsea tractor convoys. There’s also the fake religious attendance as well for CoE or Catholic schools
Unfortunately it’s a reflection on how bad some schools are, with disillusioned teachers and out of control pupils.

I know, no backbone, the youth of today. For heaven's sake, you can do it in under two hours and get there before 8.30 with only one change, if you get the 05.37 from MK.

Or was that not what you meant...?
